I enjoyed this Randall Garrett story because it was well written. There were enough hints in the body of the story to guess "WHO", but not so much that the TWIST of an ending was spoiled. There was no flat automaton going through the motions to reach an end set up by an author trying to be cute; rather, there was a developed character about whom the reader could care who encountered a life-changing phenomena.Product details

Brain Twister Randall Garrett Laurence Janifer 9781935774556 Books Reviews
How do you like your science fiction? Grim and serious and trying to answer the cosmic FAQs, the Fermi Paradoxes, the Singularities etc? Or light with some comedy thrown in for good measure? If you answered "serious", then Brain Twister is not for you. You will find it shallow and even annoying. If, on the other hand, you happen to like a Shecklean way of telling things, you will like Brain Twister, and even laugh out loud at some of its hilarious dialogues and scenes, especially a couple of FBI agents in Elizabethan costumes at a Las Vegas casino.
One might argue, that the book's basic promise, a telepath spy is weak, and one would not be far from the truth. One might also argue that this book is not really science fiction, and one would also be correct. And finally, one might argue, that comedy or not, there is a fine line between a Hugo nominee and the rest, and Brain Twister would not really qualify for that honour. This is philosophical and open to debate. Having said that however, it is a fact that Brain Twister is a quick, easy, funny, two hours read. You could read worse in, let's say, a 3 hour flight, or on a lazy Sunday.
Brain Twister may or may not be science fiction but it certainly is science fun. 3 ½ stars.
The science fiction novel "Brain Twister"(1959) concerns the use of ESP (extra sensory perception) by spies as a method to obtaining secret information concerning US rocket research. FBI agents are sent out to scour all mental hospitals for individuals with "odd" abilities. It is never adequately explained why the hospitalized mentally ill are the only repository for ESP talented individuals. The unstated premise is that you must be "crazy" to claim to possess or exhibit these talents. Yet the author(s) take great pains to describe government and industrial research into the phenomenon due to their belief that the Russians are using ESP to "peep" secrets from the West. One elderly lady "liberated" from a mental hospital believes she is the Queen of England and immortal. She insists that her G Men handlers and the doctors dress as Elizabethan courtiers and provide her with a replica of a queen's throne room - they comply with her request. I found this story a chore to finish and do not recommend it to anyone but diehard fans of Randall Garrett. Aside from some amusing dialog the story was outlandish and dragged along until the uninteresting and easy to figure out conclusion.
The novel that eventually became "Brain Twister" was first published in a much-shortened version as a two-part serial in Astounding magazine for September and October 1959. The title in Astounding was "That Sweet Little Old Lady" by Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. What started out as a 62 page long magazine story balloned into a 144-page novel. Pyramid Books first published the novel in book form as a paperback in 1962 by Mark Phillips - a pseudonym for authors Garrett and Janifer. British publisher Carroll & Graf published a paperback edition in 1992 as "Brain Twister" by Randall Garrett and Laurence M. Janifer. In 2011 Resurrection Press published a trade edition of "Brain Twister" by Randall Garrett and Laurence Janifer. Readers interested in this title can download it for free from Project Gutenberg look under Mark Phillips.
actually, i do not consider this to be a trilogy, ... i think of these three novellas as one novel,
normally, i prefer my science fiction, .. hard science, [a la galactic center series - gregory benford or the dune saga - frank herbert], yes, i agree, as another reviewer stated, this novel is a bit dated, .... for me that is not a problem, ... i enjoy reading old, old books, ... trying to put myself in that era,.... scifi is my passion, ...& i am relatively well-read, well-versed in the genre, ....
while i cannot give this 'series' five stars,... &, even four is stretching it a bit, .... three and one half is appropriate, ...
an enjoyable, and humorous read for a lazy afternoon, ....wishing that they were collected in one hardback volume, ... i have the older pyramid printings, ..fairly sure that i bought my copies at a used bookstore sometime late 1964, ... re-read them about three or four years ago,... i still enjoyed them,... yes, one needs to suspend, to a small extent, ... some judgement, ... but, for the time, they were well written
a i have stated a great read for a lazy afternoon
Proves that my dog might be able to get published. Says that ten more words are required in this review so that should do it...don't buy it.
Very interesting book - has comedic content to keep it interesting besides the sci-fi content
it is volume one of a trilogy, ..
STILL reads well,... even as an old, cynical adult,..
if one enjoys scifi, ... telepathy, telekinesis, & all that jazz, .... give this trilogy a whirl, .. you, more than likely, will not be disappointed, ..
